Views around the Walled Garden - 24/01/2012

Overnight rain had not turned to sleet or snow as predicted by the weather forecast. It continued to rain on my journey to Wallington this morning and the temperature dropped to 1oC. The rain continued up to 10.30 am and although it remained cloudy there was no further showers.

My first job of the day was to help prune and tie up Quince on a border beside West Lawn. After lunch we started to cut back dead vegetation in the Cottage borders beside the Courtyard. Under the dead plants the snowdrops and acconites were starting to flower. The weather kept visitors away today.

I took the following photographs on the way to and in the Walled Garden before starting work:

Views around the Grounds and Walled Garden - 18/01/2012

Much milder today after four days of hard frosts. The temperature was 9oC and in the Walled Garden the soil was muddy. There was no rain today and it did get a little brighter in the afternoon.

I spent the morning tidying up the Plum Border and moved onto the borders on East Lawn after lunch. The warmer and dryer weather gave a few visitors the opportunity to walk around the grounds and Garden.

The severe weather of a year ago is a distant memory and the warmer weather so far has allowed the gardeners to catch up and get ahead with all of the work. Around the Walled Garden there are small areas with patches of colour appearing and the seasonal plants are starting to come out.

In the orchard the snowdrops have started to flower.

Views around the grounds and Walled Garden - 11/01/2011

The unseasonable warm weather continued - even at 8.00 a.m. the temperature was 10 oC! As I travelled to Wallington the early morning sky was red and I stopped to take the following photograph.

The weather remained dry for the rest of the day and although it was cloudy the temperature never really dropped. The property saw a steady trickle of visitors taking advantage of the day to get out and about in the grounds and Walled Garden.

I spent my day clearing the paths and area around the Compost heap. Towards the end of the afternoon the wind was starting to get up again.

Views around the grounds and Walled Garden - 04/01/2012.

Made my first visit of the year to Wallington today. Severe weather yesterday was to close the property due to health and safety issues. The high winds continue to do their damage to the trees around the grounds.

The weather forecast was for rain and high winds returning in the afternoon and I was set to work near to the entrance and Clock Tower. Our first job was to remove decorative gravel and slate from two raised flower beds. We managed to get this completed just after lunch and my next job was to work on the compost heaps near to East Lawn.

The rain appeared in the early afternoon but the wind had not got up before I left.

The following photographs were taken this morning before I started work.
